Earth Day Activities We Love
As many of you know, our roots started in and remain heavily anchored in the garden. We are lovers of nature over here at Bloom Culture and with Earth Day coming up on April 22nd, this is an opportune time to speak to the value that plants and florals bring to the well-being of our planet and to you.
Gardening is a wonderful way to connect with nature and the outdoors plus contribute to the environment. Planting florals and plants not only adds beauty to your surroundings but also helps to clean the air, improve the ecosystem and provide food and shelter for wildlife and insects.
Getting started in gardening is an exciting and rewarding experience that you can do by yourself or with others and is an ideal activity to celebrate Earth Day.
You can start off small by simply adding a few containers to your front porch or back deck and filling them with plants of various sizes and varieties that are native to our 3b growing zone and unique climate such as Salvia, Coneflower, Hens and Chicks, or Blue Fescue. Need help deciding? Talk to your local garden centre or come into the Bloom Culture studio to best determine which plants will thrive in your space considering the sun exposure and your lifestyle.
Outdoor plants and florals also provide sustenance to another of our favorite outdoor friends. Bees!
90% of our wild plants and 75% of our crops depend on pollination and without bees, we risk significant damage to our ecosystems as well as ourselves. With continuous development in and around our urban areas, bee habitats are getting destroyed faster than they can be replaced which is another reason why we are so passionate about quality plantings outdoors. Perennials and annuals offer nourishing and vital blooms all through the season which is why it is always a good idea to utilize both in your garden. Fun fact! Canada is home to 855 species of native bees.
Not ready for a floral garden yet still wanting to contribute to a healthier planet year round?
This Earth Day consider visiting smaller markets that carry locally grown produce and products that in turn support our local farmers and small businesses and reduce the carbon footprint associated with transportation. This also helps to support the local economy and promote sustainable practices.
Lastly, on April 22nd, get outside and go for a nature walk or hike. This is a great opportunity to enjoy the beauty of our planet and a wonderful way to get some exercise and reconnect with self at the same time. Bonus points to those of you who bring along a garbage bag and pick up litter along the way too!
Happy Earth Day and happy gardening!
Remember that you deserve to live beautifully in your yard, in your home, and where you work. We love being part of the journey and are so honored to help you bring life to your space through quality plants and florals plus sound advice.
